Wonders of the beautiful Piazza di Spagna

The famous Spanish Steps were built during the eighteenth century with 135 to climb, 135 steps, and is a popular spot for visitors and locals alike to sit and enjoy the good weather. Originally it united the Spanish embassy before the Holy See with the church of Trinitá de Monti, hence the name of the square. It was financed by the French Bourbons and designed by Alessandro Specchi and Francesco de Sanctis. Another great attraction is the Fontana della Barcaccia, a beautiful baroque fountain commissioned by Bernini that shines in all its splendour among the bustle of people. As a result of the flooding of the Tiber River, an interesting solution was found. They partially submerged the sculptures leaving them for ornamental value.

The month July hosts one of the most popular festivities among Italians, the Donna Sotto le Stelle. Literally translating as “woman under the stars”, it is a parade of world-class Italian fashion designers, some of whom have shops on the Via Condotti that leads to the same square. Here you can find luxury fashion brands such as Valentino, Bulgari or Gucci. The models descend the steps of Piazza di Spagna in spectacularly elegant costumes. The Via del Babuino is another of the most important in the area as it connects Piazza di Spagna with Piazza del Popolo. Within the same square you can also see the Obelisk of Pope Pius VI, the Column of the Immaculate and the Propaganda Fide Palace.

The square became a mecca for artists, writers and intellectuals from all over Europe. In its surroundings you can find houses where poets such as John Keats and Percy Shelley once lived, and you will also discover Babington’s tea room. Its Anglo-Saxon name is named after its founders Isabel Cargill and Anna Maria Babington, who used it to attract the English and Italian upper class and turn Piazza di Spagna into the heart of Rome’s culture and literature. The stars of Hollywood cinema also surrendered to the charms of the Piazza di Spagna, filming with Gregory Peck and Audrey Hepburn.
