    History of the Rome Arena

The Colosseum was originally called the Flavian Amphitheatre in honour of the Flavian dynasty of emperors that commissioned its construction between 70 and 72 AD. Its construction was motivated by the need to magnify the triumphs of the Roman Empire which at the time wanted to appear as the centre of the world. Its construction which used some 100,000 cubic metres of travertine marble for a façade of around 80 arches, was built in a record time of just 10 years. The inauguration of the building lasted around 100 days, in which the Roman public enjoyed watching the deaths of dozens of beasts and gladiators. The main attraction of the Colosseum was its public entertainment in front of the Roman people who were organised in terms of their level of wealth. The main spectacle was the fights between gladiators, of which most were slaves and prisoners trained to fight in the arena to obtain their freedom.

The Colosseum is currently visited by more than 6 million tourists each year, and it is possible to visit it 365 days a year for a price of between 7 and 12 euros. Located in Piazza del Colosseo, it is a great location to enjoy the most historical and cultural side of the capital of Italy. Nearby you can find the Basilica of San Giovanni which is considered to be the oldest church in the world, and Michaelangelo’s Moses in the small church of San Pietro in Vincoli. In the centre, you will enjoy proximity to many restaurants, bars, shops and other places of entertainment. It is true that given its popularity this area is on the rise. Whether as a couple, as a family or a group of friends, this area is perfect to enjoy a wonderful and unforgettable stay in the city of Rome.

Points of interest close to the Colosseum

    • Piazza Navona: This is one of the most famous squares in Rome, and an impressive example of the Baroque period. It is characterised by its famous fountain – the Fontana dei Quattro Fuimi (Four Fountains). An artistic and socio-cultural centre that is simultaneously one of the liveliest areas of the capital.

    • Trevi Fountain: The most famous and monumental fountain in Rome. Legend has it that if you ask for three wishes and throw three coins with your right hand over your left shoulder, they will come true. No one should leave Rome without having visited!

    • Roman Forum: It was the centre of the ancient city of Rome where politics, market and religion came together. It is one of the greatest examples of the Roman Empire along with the Colosseum. The equivalent of what in Greece was called agora, and was the centre of meetings and protests, and business. It currently preserves the remains of emblematic places such as the Temple of Cástor and Pólux.

    • Tito Arch: This is located on Via Sacara, near the Roman Forum. It was built by the Emperor Dominic after the death of his brother Titus, an ‘Arc de Triomphe’ to commemorate his victories against the Jews.

    • Piazza Venezia: It receives its name from the palace that is in the same square, a former papal seat. On the balcony of this square, Mussolini gave his famous speech in which he announced the beginning of the war.
