In the past, underground homes were a popular trend. Today, some old concepts such as the cave house have adapted to modern architecture, which seeks a better integration of housing with nature. These modern houses are an example of how impressive underground homes can be.
Villa Ypsilon underground home in Greece
This spectacular underground house is one of the most unique among modern underground houses. It is called Villa Ypsilon and has been designed by the London studio LASSA. Hidden in a field of olive trees on the Peloponnese peninsula, this house looks like an alien spaceship camouflaged in the earth.

The peculiar design of this modern house has not only a visual intent but it’s also practical. The main objective of the architects was to create a 150 square meter house with a good isolation. Since it is an area with high temperatures and high humidity, placing it underground is an ideal solution. The natural earth roof isolates the house from the heat, in addition to integrating it with the beauty of its surroundings.

When looking at this house from above you can see that the design hardly impacts the landscape that surrounds it. What’s more, the house is camouflaged with the surrounding olive grove.

Inside, the house consists of two main areas: a private wing with three separate bedrooms facing east and a large south facing lounge that joins the three patios.

The project framework and all furniture were digitally designed, manufactured and assembled by LASSA in a very short time, with great precision and profitability.
