When to visit Cephalonia

Kefalonia is a paradisiacal Greek island and depending on whether you’re after total seclusion away from crowds or guaranteed heat, we have advice on when is best to book your holiday rental in Kefalonia. Prices are certainly most reasonable when flights are first released during the months of April and May and you will be pretty much guaranteed sunshine. As with all European destinations it is not always guaranteed coming out of winter, but in terms of pricing, this is the best time to visit. In April, it is not uncommon that it is warm enough to swim in the sea. Naturally prices are highest during the summer months and this is when temperatures are averaging around 28 degrees Celsius, but this is when the island is busier. The best time of year to visit if you’re looking for less crowds, slightly lower temperatures but warm sea is September and October.

Melissani Cave and the best beaches

  • Antisamos Beach: A naturally beautiful beach with a Blue Flag rating. It has green hills hugging it either side, a beach bar and watersports aplenty. You might recognise this beach from the film ‘Captain Corelli’s Mandolin’ which was filmed here.
  • Melissani Cave: Originally the Cave of the Nymphs in Greek mythology, this enchanting subterranean cave that is truly a natural wonder. It is surrounded by forestry and is a luscious oasis inside.
  • Mount Ainos: The only national park found on a Greek island, with its highest peak at 1,628m, the Megas Soros. It is made up of dense forest and wild horses.
  • Drogarati Cave: A natural miracle that was only revealed following an earthquake over 300 years ago. Inside the cavern is an incredible array of yellow and orange stalactites hanging from the roof. It dates back over 150 million years, and has been known to host musicians and opera singers in the ‘Sala of Apotheosis’ due to the acoustics.
  • Lourdas Beach: A fully equipped beach with sun loungers, parasols and watersports. There are also plenty of bars to eat and drink and it possesses crystal clear waters and white sand.

  • Emblisi Beach: A bay that is perfect for snorkelling with a safe enclosed bay. It is a pebble beach with calm waters and is located in the north.
  • Xi Beach: This beach is famous for its particular sand and clay cliffs and makes for a beautiful array of colours. You can mix water and clay to make a mud mask and enjoy all of the facilities surrounding the beach. The sunset is to die for, when the red of the clay sand mixes with the blues of the sky and water.
