Holiday rentals - San Sebastián, Spain

San Sebastián is one of the most important cities in the Basque Country and is capital of Gipuzkoa. It is a city of many names; Donostia and Donosti are the two most widely used variants in Basque. It is also known as the Bella Easo, or simply Easo, on the belief that the ancient Roman city of Oiasso was located there. It has an authentic arsenal of nicknames that will give you a lot of flexibility when recognising the name of this fantastic coastal city. San Sebastian is an important tourist destination of the north of Spain, and holds host to many great cultural events such as the International Film Festival. Its cultural heritage is upheld by the likes of the Mota Castle or the Wind Comb, and you will be amazed by its unique surroundings, or its world-famous gastronomy. To be sure you are choosing the perfect location for your apartment to rent, we have compiled the best areas of Donostia:

  • Centre/Old Town: The apartments in San Sebastian city centre are without a doubt the best option for a comfortable and easy stay. The neighbourhood of San Sebastian is made up of four historical sections. The Old Town is the second oldest area in the city, and here you will find the fishing port. Miraconcha occupies a privileged position on the seafront of La Concha, and is a luxury area full of palaces and green space. Old Amara is the oldest part of the city, and Riberas de Loyola is a new neighbourhood located between Old Amara and Loyola which is newer.
  • Amara: This area is divided between the old and new part, and the newer sections forms part of the Ensanche de Amar. It is a central area which is 10 minutes from the centre of San Sebastian and important places for tourists. It is a quiet area but is still replete with bars, restaurants and services. If you like football, here you will find the Anoeta Stadium which is home to Real Sociedad football team.
  • Gros: Next to the La Zurriola beach and east of the river Urumea is this area. It is perfect for surfing and hiking which is particularly notorious here in San Sebastian. This beach has the perfect conditions for all types of surf, even at competition level. A little further east is Mount Ulia with roads and viewpoints that will leave you speechless. The presence of the Palace of Congresses and the Kursaal Auditorium stand out in particular.
  • Antiguo/Igueldo: This is one of the most iconic areas in the city, as it the area of first human settlement. Just to the west of La Concha bay, it is located behind the Ondaterra beach. Despite its working class origins, most of the city apartments are concentrated in an alternative and interesting area. It also forms part of the Igueldo mountain area, which is home to one of the oldest amusement parks in Spain and the symbolic Peine de los Vientos in its most coastal part.

When to visit the capital of Gipuzkoa

The capital of Gipuzkoa is a viable tourist destination regardless of the time of year. Its incredible monuments alongside an impressive natural environment and exquisite gastronomy make winter an even more attractive place to visit and book cheap accommodation in San Sebastian. One of the best times to visit to experience its food is in the middle of January until the end of April, which is known as the ‘txotx’ season. This particular Gipuzkoan event mixes the joy of food and drink and it is common for visitors to go to some of the best cider houses in the city to taste Basque cider along with authentic pintxos. The city of San Sebastian therefore breaks with much of the tourist seasonality throughout most of Spain, which makes it a great alternative destination. The first few months of the year present a different opportunity to explore the city, and prices fall around 10% on these dates. High season begins from May till September, which translates to an increase in prices in holiday rentals in San Sebastian. The presence of families on the beaches of La Concha and Ondarreta contrasts the influx of surfers on Zurriola beach where surf competitions are also held. To explore the city’s cultural side, the list is also very extensive as it hosts the International Jazz Festival of San Sebastian which is the oldest of its kind in Spain and is held every July. Others such as the September Film Festival, the Music Fortnight in August or the Horror Film Festival at the end of September.

What to do in San Sebastián

  • La Concha Beach: Over 1,350m in length, this is the largest beach and is one of the principal symbols of the city. It is framed by Mount Urgull on one side and Igueldo on the other, with the island of Santa Clara in the distance. La Zorriola Beach: Another great beach of the city that is located between the Urumea river and the Ulia mountain. Its waters are perfect for surfing and there are many sports competitions and concerts.
  • Monte Urgull: Next to the Old Town, this small mountain rises up 123m above sea level. It is surrounded by the beautiful New Promenade, and still retains some of its ancient fortifications that protected the cities centuries ago.
  • Mount Ulia: In the far east of Donostia, you can find this mountain which extends to the port of Pasajes. It reaches 253m above sea level and is now classified as a protected national park and forms part of the Pyrenees. It is perfect for hiking, and has spectacular views of the city.
  • Santa Clara Island: In the heart of La Concha bay and just in front of the beach is this small island. It was formerly joined with the mainland and formed a peninsula, however to this day it has a lighthouse and its own beach that can be accessed by boat during the summer months.
  • Mota Castle: At the highest point of Mount Urgull, this fort was built at the request of Sancho el Mayor de Navarra in the 12th century. Accompanied in its first centuries by a wall surrounding the whole town, it was mainly used for defensive purposes. It now exhibits a collection of original pieces such as its cannons.
  • San Telmo Museum: With a collection of ethnographic and Fine Art pieces, it shows the the evolution of Basque society over the centuries from Roman times to Oteiza. It was inaugurated in 1902 and its headquarters is a former convent of Dominican friars.
  • Buen Pastor Cathedral: This is one of the most emblematic and colourful religious buildings in the region. It was built in the late nineteenth century, following a neo-Gothic style and its verticality is particularly striking. It is the seat of the diocese of San Sebastián and is linked to the archdiocese of Pamplona.
  • Peine del Viento: At the end of Ondarreta beach, this work is formed by the set of three steel sculptures embedded in the rocks of the Cantabrian Sea. The process, carried out in 1976 by Eduardo Chilllida, also included the modification of the coastal environment so that the impact of the waves added to its aesthetics.
  • María Cristina Bridge: This bridge links the two banks of the Urumea River, between the neighbourhood of Gros and the Old Town. It was inaugurated in 1905 and its construction followed an eclectic style inspired by the Alexander III bridge in Paris.
  • Plaza de Gipuzkoa: In the heart of the city, its Old Town is one of its most symbolic places. This square iincludes a sculpture by José María Usandizaga, a meteorological temple, a large time table and a flower clock. In front of it, you can find the headquarters of the Provincial Council of Gipuzkoa.
  • Cristina Enea Bridge: Built in an English style, this is considered one of the most important urban historical parks in the country. Its aesthetic responds to its creator, Duke Matas; who left it as an inheritance to the Town Hall under the condition that it would not be altered in the future.
  • Alderdi-Eder Park: Located between the beach of La Concha and the City of San Sebastian, this is one of the largest green spaces in the city. It is a pleasant area that combines the views of the bay with its Tamarindos trees.
  • Kursaal Congress Centre and Auditorium: Designed by Rafael Moneo, this large architectural complex includes an auditorium and several rooms and a large chamber room. Formed by two large cubes, it was opened in 1999 and has a striking appearance.
  • Miramar Palace: This palace occupies a privileged location between the beaches of Ondarreta and La Concha and boasts incredible views of the bay. It was built in an English style and reddish colour and was built in 1893.
  • Albaola Basque Maritime Factory: In Albaola, on the other side of Mount Ulía and near Pasaia, there is a replica of the San Juan Galleon which was one of the first cargo ships designed in Euskadi during the 16th century for whaling.
