Places to stay in Costa Brava

The coast of the province of Girona is called the Costa Brava and is made up of 214 km of coastline from Portbou to Blanes. This area owes its name to the journalist Ferran Aguiló, who was the first to refer to it with the term "Brava" for its rugged and steep landscape which has made it a hotspot for Costa Brava accommodation. For centuries, the Costa Brava has been, due to its location, an important gateway to the Spanish Peninsula from other points of the Mediterranean. There were many civilisations that passed through and inhabited the Girona coast, as well as the legacy that they left behind. The Iberian City of Ullastret, the Greek and Roman Empuries of Ampurias or the Iberian settlement of Puig de Castellet represent the main archaeological remains of the Costa Brava. What particularly stands out in this territory of Girona is the natural and scenic value that Ferrán Aguiló referred to in ‘La Veu de Catalunya’. Here you will find an environment that is vast and varied, starting with the Natural Park of Cabo de Creus and the Natural Park of the Marismas del Ampurdán; passing through small archipelagos like the one of the Medas Islands, an infinite list of dream coves and some of the most beautiful villages in the country. As a result Costa Brava is a tourist hotspot today and in total there are 24 locations included in it. So, before deciding in which of them to look for your villa in Costa Brava, it will help you to know what each of them has to offer. These are our five recommendations:

  • Cadaqués: Need we say more other than the fact that Salvador Dalí fell in love with this place? It is located at the heart of the Cape of Creus which is a small marine gateway. The small fishing town is one of the most beautiful in the Costa Brava and without a doubt one of the most recommended for apartments to rent in Costa Brava.
  • Roses: South of Cape Creus, here it is much more touristy than the previous and has a lot of holiday lettings in Costa Brava. Although it is mainly known for the beaches and coves of the Gulf of Roses, few know that it has great places of interest such as the Citadel of Roses, Punta Falconera and the Parc Natural dels Aiguamolls de l'Empordà, to the south of the city.
  • Begur: Found in the surroundings of the Begur Mountains, this is another important tourist resort in summer although it is not a coastal destination as such - it has plenty of offers for accommodation in Costa Brava, Spain. However, here you will have access to the best coves in the municipality such as Platja Illa Roja, Aiguafreda or Aiguablava. The Castle of Begur is its most outstanding patrimonial landmark, together with the five defense towers that surround the town.
  • Tossa de Mar: This is another of the most important municipalities of the Costa Brava. At the foot of the Massís de les Cadiretes, it is widely known for the Castell de Tossa, located on an imposing hill south of its urban centre. Cala Futadera, Cala Pola and Platja de's Codolar are some of the other options for beaches.
  • Blanes: This is known as the "Portal of the Costa Brava". In spite of being a largely touristic town it maintains a calm atmosphere and is so a good option for family trips and Costa Brava villas with pools. From the Castle of San Juan you get a beautiful view of all Blanes, with the small island of Sa Palomera as a unique feature.

Best time to visit the Costa Brava

Like any beach destination, the Costa Brava is an area that experiences a particularly high season during the summer months. Its incredible natural environment combines cliffs with the Mediterranean Sea; many of which are only accessible by hiking or by the sea. Conservation is well maintained here and you can reach some of the most gorgeous areas without large crowds, for example Aiguablava, Cala Montjoi and La Boadella. It is therefore not surprising that the this is an important holiday destination and that the prices of Costa Brava villas increase by 70% between July and August. In addition, it is also at the end of July when Blanes celebrates an event known at a European level - the International Fireworks Competition of the Costa Brava. Beyond this, travel a few months before or a few months later and you will enjoy all the above at a much cheaper cost and with fewer crowds. On the 23rd June bonfires are lit throughout the Costa Brava to celebrate the night of San Juan. In the same way, we recommend the seasons of spring and autumn to walk the Camí de Ronda and discover the most beautiful landscapes such as the Cabo de Creus, the Marismas del Ampurdán or the Ses Negres Marine Reserve. Finally, from November to March you can find apartments up to 20% cheaper; so the low season is a great alternative to discover the Costa Brava. Here the patrimonial and cultural heritage is also very important. The Iberian City of Ullastret, the Monastery of Rhodes or art collections such as the Salvador Dalí House-Museum will allow you to make the most of your stay when you’re not relaxing on the beaches.

Camí de Ronda and other points of interest

    • Camí de Ronda: A collection of 20 smaller routes along the Costa Brava that were originally used to monitor contraband and the transit of vessels on the Catalan coast. It is a mixture of cliffs, dreamy coves and incredible landscapes and some of the most outstanding routes include Cala Tavallera - Cap de Creus, Sant Martí - Cala Montgó and Sant Feliu - Cala Romaguer.
    • Cala Illa Roja: This is one of the most famous beaches of the Costa Brava because of the huge red rock that protrudes from it. 120m in length, it is only possible to access it through the Camino de Ronda that goes from Sa Riera to the Playa del Racó, so it is a good option to escape from crowds on a virgin beach.
    • Cala Tavallera: Located in the Cabo de Creus, it can be accessed via the GR11; which connects it with Port de la Selva. Just like the previous, this 2km route is very well preserved and not too busy. It also allows nudism. The path to it crosses next to the Hermitage of Sant Baldiri.
    • Cala Pola: Unlike the previous two, this can be accessed by car. Although it can also be reached via a 6km path from Tossa de Mar. Usually busier than the others, it offers shower services, beach bars, etc. Despite this, it is a virtually virgin beach.
    • Cala Cullaró: Returning to Cabo de Creus, it is only possible to reach this beach after a 2km route from the Far del Cap de Creus. Also usually not very busy, it adds an important geological variety. In addition, thanks to a small circular route through the area it is possible to discover other coves such as Portaló, Culip or Cala d'Agulles.
    • Cala Montjoi: Located near Roses and also in the Cape of Creus, this is another small virgin cove with a rich marine life. Despite being quite isolated, it has a bar, sun loungers and even a diving centre.
    • Cap de Creus Natural Park: This beach marks the easternmost point of the Iberian Peninsula. It is an area of great geological value and reaches up to 672m in height. It is part of the last foothills of the eastern Pyrenees and between its cliffs you can find many hidden coves. There are also several hiking routes.
    • Marismas del Ampurdán Natural Park: This is an important ecosystem located in the Alt Empordà region. With an area of almost 5,000 hectares, it is home to a wide variety of species, both animals and plants; as well as salt and freshwater lagoons.
    • Medas Islands: Not far from L'Estartit, this is a small archipelago formed by 7 islands and some islets. The Grande Meda is the largest of them and all are protected as ZEPIM, making it one of the most important marine reserves in the Mediterranean.
    • Ses Negres Marine Reserve: This extends from Cala de Aiguafreda to Sa Riera. Protected since 1993, any activity that may deteriorate the seabed is prohibited; so its ecological value is very high. In some areas it exceeds 20 m in depth.
    • Marimurtra Botanical Garden: Located on a steep mountain terrain in Blanes, it offers spectacular views of the Mediterranean. For this reason and for the ecosystems that it consists of, it is considered to be the best Mediterranean botanical garden in Europe.
    • Santa Clotilde Gardens: Also presiding over a cliff, these gardens offer an impressive view of the sea. In Lloret de Mar, it has a clear Italian influence. There is an interesting botanical variety, with which the ivy stands out including sculptures of mermaids, nymphs and fairies.
    • Empúries Ruins: These are the remains of an ancient Greek and Roman city founded in 575 BC. They are located in the Alt Empordà, next to the Gulf of Roses, in a plain between the Ter and Fluviá rivers. You will find three main areas here: the Palaiápolis, Neápolis and the Roman City.
    • Iberian city of Ullastret: This important archaeological site is located on the Monte de Sant Andreu and represents the largest urban centre of Iberian origin in Catalan territory. It was founded in the 6th century BC, although pre-existing remains have also been found in the area.

Here you can find up to 158 varieties of trees and plants inhabit its 63 contiguous vegetation zones.
    • Salvador Dalí House Museum: Located in Cadaqués, this is a small fishermen's house in which Dalí himself lived for more than 50 years. It is currently a museum of his life and works. It is also a site of Cultural Interest and Historical Heritage of Spain.
    • Castell de Montgrí: Built on the summit of the homonymous mountain in 1304, this is a large square-shaped fortification with four large cylindrical towers at each of its angles. It is well of Cultural Interest and Historical Heritage of Spain.
    • Castell de Tossa de Mar: Located in Vila Vella, this is the only walled enclosure that exists on the Catalan coast. The castle that presides over it is part of one of the most extended images of the Costa Brava, at the bottom of the beach of Tossa de Mar. It is an asset of Cultural Interest and Historical Heritage of Spain.
    • Monastery of Sant Pere de Rodes: Surrounded by the ruins of the castle of San Salvador de Verdera and those of the town of Santa Cruz de Roda, this important religious building was built in 1022 and is of Cultural Interest. From here on the mountain of Verdera, you will have excellent views.
