  • Plantage: This area does what it says on the tin, and is certainly the more botanical and green part and is a wonderfully picturesque place to book. We highly recommend that you don’t leave this wonderful place without seeing one of the traditional Dutch windmills in this eastern part of the city. It is home to the Jewish quarter and many museums, and everything is in walking distance.
  • The Joordan: For a truly local ‘Dutch’ experience, look no further than the Joordan. There are plenty of trendy places to eat and drink and you couldn’t be better located to be next to the most gorgeous canals.   • Canal Ring / Nine Streets: Known in Dutch as ‘De 9 Straatjes’, this quirky district is one of the best looking you could choose for your stay in Amsterdam. When to visit the Dam

The Dutch capital is served well by great transport links. Internationally, flights arrive at Amsterdam Schiphol Airport (AMS) and London to Amsterdam flights are not at all difficult to find. Its central location in Europe means that there are also cheap flights to Amsterdam regularly. If you’re coming from the UK, there is also the option of taking the ferry. Since the Netherlands is a small and centrally located country, it is easy to travel from Brussels to Amsterdam by bus or by train, travelling Amsterdam to Rotterdam, or catching a Paris to Amsterdam train. The weather is generally pleasant for visiting, and the winters are cool but a good time to visit. The best time of the year to visit is spring or summer, where it is normally sunny and warm, or alternatively in the month of October when the weather is still good enough to enjoy the city, besides the possibility of rain. It is most recognisable by its national monument in the form of an obelisk in the centre. Here you will also find the wax museum of Madame Tussaud Amsterdam, known for its famous figures.

What to eat in the Dam

No stay in Amsterdam is complete without indulging in a bit of the local cuisine. Most famous is probably the Stroopwafel. This is a creation made up of two thin waffles glued together with sweet syrup, and are best enjoyed warmed up on a hot drink beforehand. Another delicacy is the bitterballen, which are deep friend meatballs served with mustard. They are perfect alongside a Belgian beer. Another one to try has got to be the raw herring, under the name of 'broodje haring' which are served in 'haringhandels' which are herring carts around the city.
