Have you ever been on holiday on a houseboat, floating house or floating house?
If yes, then you certainly share our overwhelming experience, would certainly go on holiday on a houseboat again or have even already booked a new arrangement.
If no, then it's time to discover something new. Spend the most precious days of the year on a houseboat and make your own experiences.
You may have a few questions?
If so, we have listed and answered the most frequently asked questions here.
Does a houseboat sway and make a lot of noise (splashing water etc.)? Will I perhaps get seasick?
Our houseboat is fixed to the jetty and hardly moves at all. The high weight of around 16 tonnes also ensures that the boat is stable, which means that you will not normally notice that you do not have solid ground under your feet. In very stormy weather from the north-east and higher waves, there may be slight fluctuations. However, as you are not below deck, but have a clear view of the horizon, it is unlikely that you will get seasick even if there are strong fluctuations.
The Xanten North Sea does not normally have any major waves. In the prevailing weather from the south-west, our houseboat lies in the lee of the shore and the waves run in a north-easterly direction to the other side of the shore. Only in stronger winds from the seaward side can there be slight splashing on the two hulls.
How is the houseboat supplied with energy and water?
The houseboat is supplied with fresh water from the mains - just like a normal holiday home. It is also connected to the sewerage system and the electricity grid.
How can I use the electric boat?
Our houseboat is moored to the jetty and cannot be moved. To explore the Xanten lakes, we have purchased two electric boats for our guests in addition to our bicycles. Our Whaly 370, which can be driven without a licence from the age of 16, are available at all times. When booking, please indicate whether you would like to use our electric boat. When you book, you will receive comprehensive operating instructions for the houseboat and electric boat as a PDF file.
What safety precautions are there?
Smoke detectors are installed in the living room and both bedrooms in the houseboat and there is a fire extinguisher. The kitchen has an electric ceramic hob and there is no gas system. Life jackets are available for 2 children and 4 adults for leisure activities and there is a lifebuoy on board. The doors and windows are secured against burglary with bolts that engage in several positions when locked. The landing stage is also secured with a sturdy, lockable door. So you and your personal belongings are well protected with us.
What about sun and shade?
Outside, you can enjoy the sun on the roof terrace or shelter from the sun under the parasol. The bow terrace is in the shade above midday and is only exposed to the sun in the morning, morning and evening, although the overhanging roof ensures that you will find a shady spot even at these times.
Inside, the rooms are protected from too much sunlight by thermal insulation glazing and mirrored pleated blinds. In addition, the houseboat has a modern heat pump heating system, which heats in winter and can be used as air conditioning in summer.
Is the houseboat suitable for small children?
The houseboat is NOT suitable for small children who cannot swim! Life jackets are available, but the residual risk is too high in our opinion. For all other children from pre-school or primary school age who can already swim, a holiday on a houseboat is of course an absolute experience. We would recommend a minimum requirement of a "seahorse" with sufficient swimming experience so that the children can move freely under your supervision. If parents are not present, we strongly recommend that children wear life jackets - even if you are only going to the neighbouring houseboat or car for a short time.
Are pets allowed?
We have now decided not to exclude dogs in principle, but to decide on a case-by-case basis. Please contact us if you would like to bring your dog with you.
Is smoking allowed in the rooms?
No, smoking is not allowed in the rooms. There are two terraces available for this purpose.
Are we allowed to barbecue on the houseboat?
Yes, barbecuing is permitted on the bow or roof terrace using the electric barbecue provided on the houseboat. A charcoal or gas barbecue or any open fire is not permitted. Exceptions are candles in suitable and existing lanterns. As the connected load of the houseboat is limited, only a maximum of one electric barbecue can be operated at any one time. Barbecue utensils are available on the houseboat.
Is there Internet and TV on the houseboat?
There is a satellite TV connection and an LED/LCD TV in the living room, with which you can receive all unencrypted programmes from Astra 19.2E. The most important German and Dutch channels are stored in the lower programme slots. In addition, Netflix is at your disposal.
Internet access is provided free of charge via WLAN.
An electric boat ( Whaly 370 ) is available for 14 EUR/day, Senseo coffee machine + filter machine available, egg cooker, lots of crockery, cutlery and glasses available, 2 additional blankets available, garden furniture on bow and roof terrace available, Internet TV incl.
