55 beds in 5 magnificent, independent gîtes with strange names
In the heart of pastures and cows
In a beautiful region with a rich historical past
2009... Jennifer is spending a very pleasant holiday with her mum, in the south.
She's not particularly looking for a house to buy, but her eye is drawn to a property advertisement...
A huge house near Valognes, in the Cotentin region.
A love at first sight.
A breathtaking stone façade.
Arrived in Normandy for love a few months earlier, two questions arise:
"Why keep paying rent?
Why not buy a house?"
A month or two after reading the advert, Jennifer went to the estate agent and, in the process, visited the house. Immediately won over, she wrote to herself:
"That's the one!"
September 2009... The purchase completed, the keys in her pocket, Jennifer admires the white stone facade, her crush.
Hands on hips, her gaze takes in the whole property...
"Well, there's still a hell of a lot of renovation work to be done. In fact, everything needs to be redone!"
The condition of the property at the time of purchase and the future of each dwelling:
A dwelling house in need of complete renovation: la Grande Duckerie
To its right, an empty mud workshop with two beams, no windows, no doors: la Petite Duckerie
A barn with two bedrooms and a bathroom, rented out year-round: la Duckfly
A kennel with no roof, electricity or water: la Boulangerie
No matter, she knows how to roll up her sleeves to make a property sublime.
When she gets down to work, Jennifer makes some wonderful discoveries.
From the outset, everything was concrete. As she went along, she uncovered exposed stonework, a beautiful terracotta floor, magnificent fireplaces, all adorned with beautiful antique furniture...
Starting in 2009, the work would last almost 10 years.
The opening of the gîte thanks to a human adventure
For a year, she worked tirelessly and lived in the rubble and dust.
They don't mar her many dreams.
When she left her partner at the time, Jennifer never thought for a second that she would be left alone in this big house.
To cope with the extent of the work and to help her financially, she placed an ad to offer a flat share in the newly renovated Grande Duckerie.
Four friendly housemates for the first days of the gîte:
A music teacher
An osteopath
An architecture student
An engineer from DCNS in Cherbourg
This is the fine team that will occupy the premises for a year.
A year with an atmosphere of sharing, good understanding, evenings around the piano.
Jennifer is over the moon!
This flat-sharing arrangement enabled her to finish work on the workshop next door to the Grande Duckerie:
The future Petite Duckerie.
Then it was time for Jennifer's friends to leave. She misses the good-natured atmosphere terribly.
In the summer of 2012, she decided to rent the Grande Duckerie.
The gîtes adventure was officially launched!
English, Irish and French guests, always very pleasant guests, stay in the big house (the Grande Duckerie), while Jennifer lives in the Petite Duckerie.
She has set up a pretty bedroom there, with a glass roof, which is more than enough for her.
The year-round tenant of the barn (the Duckfly) eventually leaves.
Inspired as ever, Jennifer says to herself:
"Why not rent out all three properties? I'll live in the Boulangerie, close to the other houses. It's perfect for managing the whole thing easily."
Action - reaction, she applies for planning permission for the Boulangerie.
She wants to renovate this home with a beautiful veranda and a warm environment, to live in.
History of each house in the La Duckerie gîtes
The previous owner, who invested little in renovating the house, housed a handyman in the Boulangerie.
It turns out that this "multi-functional" man cherished ducks!
He created a mould of his duck and inserted the model just about everywhere in the property:
The top of the fireplaces, the flower boxes, everything was stamped "duck".
When Jennifer was looking for a name for her property, her eyes fell on one of the many flat-billed waterfowl... A thought, a click...
With a laugh, she suggested "Duck"... Deal!
Idea validated!
This will be the Duckerie!
The Grande Duckerie for the big house and the Petite Duckerie for the other.
Both chic and funny, these names are perfect.
Each part of the gîte is independent. La Grande and La Petite Duckerie are separated by a screen.
A family on one side and a couple on the other.
Jennifer has arranged everything so that everyone can live in complete privacy.
La Grande Duckerie
With its rustic-country chic style, it exudes a lot of soul, an old-fashioned, warm atmosphere.
You enter through a large wrought iron gate, hunted out by Jennifer, and park in front of the gîte.
No-one will see you on your terrace.
You'll also have your own games room.
And guess what its former life was?
.... The house's former woodshed and garage!
This house is decorated, in part, with Jennifer's own furniture. She left them behind after living there.
In the red bedroom, enjoy sitting on her great-grandparents' sofa.
Or admire her grandmother's chandelier in the royal bedroom!
This house really does have a soul.
You'll feel right at home.
La Petite Duckerie
It's friendly workshop style from the 19ᵉ century era is sure to charm you.
You will benefit from your own private parking and will reach your gîte through a small gate and a private driveway, without passing under the windows of other guests.
Your terrace will be sheltered from neighbouring eyes.
When designing this gîte, Jennifer had just one idea in mind... to incorporate a black grand piano.
Nothing is impossible for Jennifer when "decoration", "layout" and "making your gîte sublime" all come together in the same sentence.
And it works!
The grand piano has found its place and the black lacquered kitchen matches the colour of the instrument.
A homemade bookcase, with integrated lighting, a large selection of antique books and a fireplace, this charming literary corner exudes a peaceful atmosphere that's perfect for reading.
A chiselled wrought-iron staircase leads to the bedroom and bathroom, which are both very cosy.
4 years ago, while bargain hunting, Jennifer unearthed a superb original bathtub, brown, round and spacious... She fell in love with it.
This bathtub never really found its place in the other rooms.
It will fit in perfectly in the bathroom at La Petite Duckerie.
This romantic little gîte, with its exposed stone and noble materials, is a great favourite with couples.
The Duckfly
Renaming the Grange was a must...
Jennifer asked her chimney sweep to design a duck above the fireplace, which he built to measure.
Stirred by a very personal artistic impulse, he drew a duck in motion, its wings spread:
"Oh well, that's art! It's much prettier when a duck flies!"
Sébastien then cried out:
"A duck that flies? Then Duckfly it is!"
At first reluctant, Jennifer now loves the name.
The Duckfly gite has a large reception room with classically themed rooms, but always with a very personal decor and unique colours.
Incrusted into the walls of what was the barn, you can still see the rings where the cows were tied.
This gîte also enjoys total independence.
The back of the house, clad in cathedral windows, overlooks the courtyard, but without direct access.
If you book the whole property, Jennifer will open all the doors for you. The gites will be accessible within a minute of each other.
If you have only rented the Duckfly, the outside door will be closed.
The various courtyards will not be accessible.
No one can see each other, everyone is independent. You won't even know if the rest of the property is rented, so you won't be disturbed by noise pollution.
The Duckfly houses a relaxation room with Sauna and SPA, under their magnificent glass roof.
Oriented on the Grande Duckerie side, it will be impossible to see inside.
In the evening, installed in your whirlpool bath, you will enjoy an exceptional view of the illuminated gardens and the stars.
La Boulangerie
At one time, this place housed the farm's bread oven, hence the evocative name.
Then, the former tenants of the barn converted it into a kennel. Small in size, the cottage was enlarged.
The viability of the house was enhanced by a wooden extension, which now houses the bathroom and kitchen.
The olive green and duck blue colours were carefully chosen to match the modern style of this small, bright and original gite.
Two olive trees planted in the garden, together with a set of outdoor lights, create a colourful and magical atmosphere at nightfall.
La Voisine
Gîte named in special dedication to the neighbour of Jennifer's property.
The 'famous' neighbour has been looking to sell her house for some time.
Sentimentally attached, she has been unable to find a buyer.
In 2017, she decided to rent it out...
Maybe she'll want to come back one day?
Jennifer's keen mind is bubbling...
"What a great opportunity! Peace and quiet with no neighbours. It has an incredible charm with its stone staircase and huge walled garden. A golden opportunity to bring this beautiful property into the fold of the Duckerie farmhouse sites."
A commercial lease signed and it's off to enrich the adventure of La Duckerie gîtes in Tamerville!
Mission triggered!
A real "home staging", everything is redone, painted, wallpapered... From floor to ceiling.
Each room has its own colour, in a very fashionable Swedish style.
Jennifer is constantly investing in the improvement and comfort of this really cosy gîte, so guests will want for nothing.
You can relax with family or friends in the games room with table football, table tennis and pool table.
Beneath the two large arches formerly used as a barn, Jennifer has installed a private jacuzzi and a lounge area adorned with a play of lights for colourful evenings.
If it rains?
This space will be perfect for a barbecue and for playing table tennis in the dry!
Very bright, quiet, walled, not overlooked, beautiful palm trees in the courtyard, this house is much appreciated. It has real character.
Gîtes and culture in the heart of the Cotentin
Valognes
A 20-minute walk from La Duckerie gîte, you can discover the magnificent town of Valognes, with its prestigious architectural heritage.
The town's 2000-year history dates back to antiquity. Valognes was built near the ancient Gallo-Roman colony of Alauna.
The remains of the Gallo-Roman baths at Alleaume remain from this period.
As you immerse yourself in Valognes, right in the heart of the Cotentin Peninsula, you'll be treading the cobbles of a town with a rich historical past and a proven intellectual and social role.
Did you know that this town of almost 8,000 inhabitants was nicknamed "the Little Versailles of Normandy"?
In the 17 and 18ᵉ centuries, this town abounded with a plethora of aristocrats and no fewer than a hundred mansions were built within the walls of the prosperous city.
Before joining the Court of Versailles, the subjects were educated for a few months in contact with the "aristocratic fauna" of Valognes.
They learn good manners and the codes of the Royal Court.
Today, there are around 35 magnificent town houses. Don't hesitate to push open the doors to discover their beautiful cobbled courtyards and ornamental gardens.
Many were destroyed during the Second World War.
The Hôtel de Beaumont can be visited and if you're lucky, you'll be able to meet its owner, the countess!
Superb, well-maintained and intact, this mansion is magnificent.
As you walk through the town, you'll come across some splendid streets with white stone facades.
They could easily be used as a film set!
Tamerville
A 3-minute walk from La Duckerie gîte, you can reach the village of Tamerville by foot. Here you will come across a beautiful church, listed as a historic monument.
Surrounded by pastures and cows, you'll be spoilt for choice when it comes to the walks on offer in Tamerville.
Hurry over, you'll be made very welcome at La Duckerie gîtes for a relaxing, peaceful stay in a chic country setting!
