The Vila is located on an alluvial plain formed by the sand dragged by the Ter and Daró rivers on their way to the mouth, just 15 meters above sea level. Due to this, it has a large network of canals and irrigation systems, among which we highlight the Rec del Molí, the Rec de Madral or d'en Fonts.
Added to its situation, surrounded by water, is the rainfall in spring and autumn, so it is normal for us to find Gualta often flooded. On the other hand, it is a beneficial reason for the irrigated cultivation to which they use their land; vegetables, fruit trees, apple and peach trees, as well as cereals, alfalfa and corn that they plant in drier lands.
El Daró and the Water Mill
The waters of the Daró River come mainly from the Ter River, to channel them and use them in the crop irrigation network, until it reaches the sea, the Rec del Molí was built. It was in the 17th century when the counts of Peralada ordered the construction of the Water Mill, taking advantage of the fortified building that existed next to the Molí rec.
Despite the state of abandonment of this old medieval building, the Molí de Gualta is a heritage element, in it we can see its castle or fortress shape. It still preserves the turbine dated to the first quarter of the 20th century, made up of double vertical blades and impellers and a central expulsion tube. It is also possible to find the remaining alternator, abandoned in one of the mill rooms.
Between 1914 and 1915, thanks to the Companyia Mundet of Torroella, the Water Mill was transformed into a power plant and supplied power to no less than 29 towns. Years later between 1930-1935, to expand the supply to other towns, two more alternators were added that also made it possible to make ice with the excess power. The hydroelectric plant closed in 1965 with the cessation of its activity.
The municipality of Gualta has 2 restaurants, a supermarket, a bar and a bakery.
A few meters away there is an equestrian center where you can book horse rides.
Golf Empordà 4 km away and Pitc & Putt de Gualta 1 km away, as well as the famous Mas Sorrer, entertainment area
Gualta has an area of just over 9 km2, it is located on the right bank of the Ter River, between the towns of Ullà, Torroella de Montgrí and Fontanilles, straddling the regions of Baix Empordà and Baix Ter.
