NATURE MAKES SCHOOL - THE GESÄUSE RESORT ALTE SCHULE
At the brand-new Gesäuse Alte Schule Nature Park Resort in Hieflau, no one has to sit in a school desk anymore.
In fact, you won't want to leave the former school, such is the cozy atmosphere of the newly created apartments within.
Four units are available, for four, six, and two times eight people respectively.
Each is fully equipped, from the kitchen and a cozy reading nook – or as Styrians say, a "Knotzecke" – to the bathroom.
Feel at home without any obligations.
Because the Alte Schule certainly has a good soul.
Renate Kronsteiner welcomes new arrivals, informs them about excursion destinations, delivers the breakfast basket assembled according to guests' wishes to their door – and takes care of the treasures in the in-house communal refrigerator.
It is stocked with products from the region, provided by selected Gesäuse partners.
Whether it's a breakfast egg or goat cheese from the Milwisch family – here you can be sure that the chicken and goat are Styrian originals. If you still crave Styrian wine or a sweet finish, you won't have to go far to reach the nearest shopping facility: the local supermarket is less than 20 meters from the Alte Schule.
Nevertheless, your shopping shouldn't be too extensive, as other local culinary offerings await for your evening meal: the Gasthof International, for example, or the Gasthaus zum Harmonika Waldi.
As the saying goes, after eating, one should rest; those thousand steps can easily be walked the next day in the Gesäuse mountains.
You will soon be able to rest exceptionally well: within two years, a sauna and bathing area are to be created in the Alte Schule.
We've already hinted at it: you won't want to leave this school easily. Vacation with Style The Alte Schule is a stone building about 100 years old, brought back to life by the municipality of Landl.
After the school was closed, a community participation project was initiated.
Together with the local population, the municipality of Landl decided: it would become an apartment house, incorporating existing leisure clubs.
Everyone should benefit from the New Alte Schule.
And so, the rifle club has now settled in the attic, a fitness room is available on the ground floor, and the sauna and bathing facilities are under construction.
The Alte Schule shows what can be achieved when all voices are heard: an offering has been created that benefits both visitors and the local population.
Our guests can rest assured: Styrians – and especially the "Xeisler" (locals from the Gesäuse region) – are extremely sociable people.
Socializing in the sauna is not only possible but very likely.
As they say: you get to know a country best through its inhabitants. A bit of school has remained.
Not the break bell or strict teachers.
But old school furniture, all thoroughly upcycled.
Tradition, region, and modernity form a harmonious trio here.
Lovingly restored and redesigned, a piece of old school furniture contributes to the sustainably furnished inventory.
For the new elements in the Alte Schule, local woods were used: spruce and larch, on which you sleep and walk, have grown in the region. Between Steep Rock and Wild Water Speaking of the region.
Those who can tear themselves away from the Alte Schule, and yes, that is strongly advised, have a wealth of opportunities.
The thousand steps, for example, are naturally taken in the Gesäuse National Park.
Whether steep and sweaty in the north faces of the Hochtor group or leisurely past orchards in the Styrian Eisenwurzen Nature & Geopark, for instance along the Gasteiner circular hiking trail along the Salza River.
On hot days, swing into the Wasserlochklamm gorge – with a subsequent reward of the world's best baked potatoes at the Wasserlochschenke – or bravely jump into the swimming lake at the Landl leisure park.
If you've walked on dolomite, you've at least experienced half of the Gesäuse. Amidst all the nature programs, an excursion into Styrian culinary delights should not be missed: whether a guided tour with tasting at GenussMostHof Veitlbauer or Styrian cheese soup at the young restaurateurs of Hoamat in Großreifling, the Gesäuse is not only a feast for the eyes, it tastes at least as good as it looks.
Regionality and quality meet in the kitchens of the nature park.
You will truly get to know the Gesäuse after a GeoRafting tour.
Because the Gesäuse is both: wild water and steep rock.
Luckily, Hieflau lies in the heart of both worlds.
Here the National Park, there the Styrian Eisenwurzen Nature and Geopark, where the Salza, Austria's longest undeveloped whitewater river, opens up a true Eldorado for whitewater sports enthusiasts.
And even though no grades are given at the Alte Schule today, we promise: the sleep after such an active nature program will surely be one thing – very good.
