The university and Hanseatic city of Greifswald is the second largest city in Western Pomerania after Stralsund. It is located on the Greifswalder Bodden between the Baltic Sea islands of Rügen and Usedom. Greifswald is easily accessible via the A 20 motorway and its foundation and membership of the Hanseatic League date back to the 13th century. Even today, the image of the old town is characterised by the typical Hanseatic architecture and the medieval brick Gothic style. The market square with the town hall is particularly worth seeing, and the city's cultural offerings are significant and varied compared to other cities in the state. The Vorpommern Theatre and the Pomeranian State Museum are based here. Historic ships are restored in the museum harbour on the Ryk. The Caspar David Friedrich Centre is dedicated to the life and work of the Romantic painter, who was born in Greifswald. Concerts are also held here every year as part of the Mecklenburg-Vorpommern Festival and the Baltic Sea Festival.
