To the rear the majestic Cretan mountains provide the most appealing of backdrops; to the front the entire Gulf of Chania fills your vision, a vast swathe of coastline stretching from the Akrotiri Peninsula and Chania Town on the right, across to the Rodopos Peninsula on the far left, passing the little island of Agioi Theodoroi on the way through.
As they have done for generations, thyme-covered hills and seas of silvery-grey olive groves still dominate vast tracts of the surrounding, sparsely inhabited countryside.
