Pozzuoli is a city characterised by intense volcanic activity that has influenced its territory culturally, geographically and gastronomically. Its origins date back to 500 B.C. and in antiquity it was the main port for the exchange of grain and goods with Greece and the East. Today, you can still admire the ancient ruins of the Macellum, the ancient Roman market also called the Temple of Serapis, and the fascinating Rione Terra. Pozzuoli, together with other centres such as Cuma and Posillipo, is located in the Campi Flegrei volcanic area, famous for the phenomenon of Bradyseism, volcanic activity, and for the Solfatara, a still active crater with powerful fumaroles that can be visited.
Land lovers of nature excursions can also visit Lake Averno, defined by Dante as 'the gateway to the underworld', and Monte Nuovo, Europe's newest volcano and nature oasis. Pozzuoli is also home to a charming seafront promenade, where you can sample fish dishes and a good glass of Falanghina or Piedirosso, typical wines of the area. In addition, the islands of Ischia and Procida, which are only a few miles away, can be reached from Pozzuoli.
The Pozzuoli Solfatara and Cumana railway station is 700 m from the flat, while Naples airport is an easy 35-minute drive away. The port for embarking to the islands is a 20-minute walk away.
