The town has a good range of independent shops and a wide choice of places to eat out, a community run swimming pool and an 18 hole golf course with numerous others within easy reach. The town is also home to the Dark Sky Gin Distillery, the Dark Sky Planetarium which is well worth a visit and learn about our night skies, and the Station House Cookery School which offers various course throughout the year. If History is your thing the NTS property Broughton House home of the artist E.A Hornel along with its Japanese inspired garden is located on the High Street, with MacLellan’s Castle holding court over the town.


The local area is renowned for its stunning landscapes which include rugged sea shores intermixed with quiet sandy beaches and travelling inland to the Galloway Forest Park, Britain’s first Dark Sky Park is close by with extensive walking and mountain bike trails.
