Santa Margherita Ligure is situated on the Ligurian Riviera di Levante, in an enclosed basin in the north-western part of the Portofino promontory, and in the innermost part of the Gulf of Tigullio. The town, located east of Genoa, is surrounded by hills covered with Mediterranean vegetation overlooking the so-called 'Dolphin Coast', which links the town to Portofino. The town is a popular tourist and seaside resort on the Riviera di Levante.
Part of the municipal territory of Santa Margherita Ligure is included in the Portofino Regional Natural Park.
A little more than 30 km away you will find Genoa, the port city and capital of Liguria, historically known for its important role in maritime trade over many centuries.
Known as one of the largest medieval centres in Europe, the historic centre of Genoa is a maze of alleys (caruggi) that open unexpectedly into small squares, often linked, like the churches there, to important noble families.
The spirit of Genoa resides in its alleys, where different smells, tastes, languages and cultures mingle.
In the historical centre stands the Romanesque Cathedral of San Lorenzo, with its black and white striped façade and frescoed interior. Narrow streets lead to monumental squares such as the Piazza de Ferrari, with its characteristic bronze fountain, and the Carlo Felice opera house.
Unmissable and iconic is the Genoa Aquarium, the largest in Europe. The exhibition shows more than 70 rooms and about 12,000 specimens of 600 species from all the seas of the world. An unforgettable experience for young and old, which will fill your heart with emotion and a deep respect for the sea and its extraordinary inhabitants.
It is then impossible to leave out the Genoese culinary tradition, with the legendary basil pesto, famous throughout the world, and the focaccia, which can be savoury like focaccia with olives, onion and tomato, or even sweet and stuffed.
